Session 2 pt. II – Analog Synthesis Continued

In this session, as I was already quite familiar with the other synths being talked about, I tested Ableton’s new synth, Meld, using the same principles being discussed in class. Its very warm tone lends itself to creating full and lush pads that can be further accentuated with FX. I found that adding lots of LFO’s and automation in the filter envelopes in the synth before the reverb gave it a lot of motion and variety, which are generally the most important things to me for an expressive pad. Meld also has two new, really interesting parameters for motion and spacing. Which I noticed would bend and warp the sound in a really interesting way. Meld also offers waveforms that seem to simulate physical sounds, such as bubbles or rain. I feel like there will be a lot of exciting possibilities to discover within Meld, and I may use it as the foundation for my pad design in the coming months.
