Session 3 – Spatial Sound

In this session, I tested 8-channel audio for the first time. It was completely new territory for me and forced me to utilize my sound design knowledge in new and different ways. I wanted to make the sound within this setup feel alive, almost as if it was breathing. To do this, I got a stock vocal sample, which I played through a free rate arpeggiator and simpler with a bit of reverb. I then put LFO, each with a different rate, augmenting the gain of each audio channel. When played all together, the sound had a feeling of motion that was almost disorienting and hard to place in the room. I found this incredibly satisfying and exciting, especially imagining the possibilities with more time and exploration. This session also expanded my imagination in terms of the possibility of sound connected to different audio setups. In general, my conception of music is through headphones, laptops, monitors, and club speakers. Being able to imagine beyond this in terms of the placement and possibility of digital sound-producing objects allows me to imagine potential directions for my thesis project at UAL, the kind of things I could only produce with the resources available here. Especially after watching a video on psychoacoustic effects linked in the session’s Moodle page, I am curious how binaural beats or audio properties can function within this setup and specifically with my experiment in the session. Having sounds extremely close in tone breathing through an augmentation in volume could lead to exciting psychoacoustic possibilities.
