Further Thoughts

One of the most interesting elements of my research is how the values in black metal and EDM (the two genres synthesized by the band in my ethnographical analysis) directly contrast and oppose each other. In Takahashi and Olaveson’s study of the Canadian rave scenes, they identify the central themes of the EDM experience to include feelings and philosophies around utopia, connectedness, and personal transformation. In contrast, the imagery related to black metal is usually that of satanism, death, decay, and violence. Having an established anthropological perspective of electronic music events makes me view my own individual subjective experience of the gig in a new way. I have understood that whether intentional or not, VMO’s imaginative approach to electronic music actually encompasses so many different facets of the disquiet created around modern society including elements of techno and EDM. This is much like the disquiet expressed in black metal that asks for a return to pagan, animistic, and primal connections with nature and spiritual experiences.
